BARAKO: a review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jer Paguibitan

A local writer in his youth, with intense fervor of nationalistic ideologies, mistaken as an aspiring politician and as an activist, in his attempt to conscienticize the common people he lives with, marked the focal plot of the independent film, Barako.

The film attempted on elaborating the current and timeless socio-political issues of the local scene, so as on tracing the root causes of such dilemmas. Presented in a documentary-like format, Manolito C. Sulit, the director, producer and writer of Barako, did away with some conventions established by well-renowned indie films, such as single story plots and [dramatic characterizations]. As such, hypothetical screen shots of events during the Filipino-American War were included, assuming its role in influencing the existing socio-political condition of the domestic arena. Despite the experimental formulae for its cinematic aestheticism, the film's two-hour run time vividly defined the context of its title, instigating from Batangas' well-identified product, the barako coffee.

Barako discredits the importance of age hierarchy as its contents cater to both the young and the old. It expresses the idea that recognition of patriotic responsibilities does not demand one's chronological growth, but the maturity to accept these, as he identifies himself to where he truly belongs.
